Seminar and Internship Cycling: Part 2 (B-KUL-L02I8A)
Aims
After completing this course, the student is able:
- to act as a professional coach/trainer in young talented and elite professional cyclists, and to train/coach them to improve their performance and to prevent injuries
- to translate independently the acquired competencies and scientific insights into appropriate (individualized) training schedules to prepare talented young to elite professional cyclists for training and competition
- to coach young talented and elite professional cyclists during training and competition
- to act as a sports science expert within a cycling federation or club
This course also contributes to:
- become familiar with the world of cycling and elite sports in Flanders, by means of guest lectures, self-study, observations, ...
- learn to efficiently communicate with various key players involved in the training process: federations, team leaders, coaches, athletes, parents, physiotherapists, nutritionists, sports doctors, event organizers,…
Previous knowledge
Previous knowledge:
Highly recommended to have taken the courses training and coaching cycling (eg. L00G0B) and internship cycling (eg. L00G4B) and to have the qualification Trainer B Cycling (VTS).
The student is already familiar with various aspects of coaching (young) competitive cyclists. The student must have been actively involved in the supervision of (young) elite cyclists and in the organization of training courses.
Prerequisites credit contract:
Students are in possession of one of the following degrees:
- Bachelor in de lichamelijke opvoeding en bewegingswetenschappen
To follow this course the student is required to have followed all courses from the truncus and the major of his/her main subject, with the exception of MP part 1 and MP part 2.
Prerequisites for students who are not registrered for the program bachelor of Physical Education and Movement Sciences/Master of Movement and Sports Sciences, but wish to include the course as a component of choice in their program:
These students should contact the coordinator of the course. On the basis of prior knowledge and motivation, the coordinator will determine whether or not the student can be admitted to the course.

Content
In the seminars, cycling-specific themes are discussed and an attempt is made to connect as closely as possible to the reality of training guidance and competitive sport. Attention is paid to the guidance of talented athletes on a conditional, technical and mental level.
Topics:
- measuring and evaluating performance in cyclists
- training preparation for periodization in the context of and specific objectives
- talent detection and development
- injuries prevention and treatment in cycling
- scientific support to performance in cycling
- Determinants of performance: nutrition, food supplements, massage, aerodynamics, pedaling techniques, body position on the bicycle, mental aspects, doping, acclimatization (height, temperature, time lag)…
- strategies for recovery: nutrition, food supplements, cryotherapy, compression socks…
- prevention of overtraining
- policy factors in elite cycling - Cycling Vlaanderen, Belgian Cycling - structure of clubs
- partial assistance in the practicals/seminars of phase 3 of het bachelor program and phase 1 of the master program
- evaluation of new trends/hypes in cycling using peer reviewed articles

4 ects. Internship Cycling: Part 2 (B-KUL-L03I0a)
Content
By means of the internship, students are familiarized with the various aspects of sports performance coaching of competitive cyclists, both at the level of the club and the federation. During the internship, the student will be actively involved in the guidance and coaching of competitive cyclists and elite youth in the organization of trainings, internships and competitions at competition level. Thus the student can be fully proficient in the practice of training and coaching of competitive cyclists on a national and international level.
Internal indepentend internship:
- guiding competitive cyclists (talented youth), in which at leats 1 on the level of Under 23, elite without contract or professional cyclist
- to assist tests of talented youth and professional cyclists within Bakala Academy Athletic Performance Center
External independent internship:
- training days, workshops, clinics

The tasks of the student regarding the internship consists of the following aspects:
- 1. making the planning and periodization of a cyclist
- 2. to prepare trainings, according to the periodization and the specific objectives proposed by the supervisor: preparation, communication, execution, follow-up and adjustment,reflection
- 3. to make the profile of the cyclist (strength / weakness analysis), taking into account physical condition, body composition, mental strength, technical skills, tactics … and to translate the results into the training process
- 4. Assistance by activities during internship (preparation, evaluation, ...)
- 5. to make a portfolio of all trainings and related activities, initiatives and side information (log), including personal reflection
- 6. Presentation and interview (Q&A) of the internship project for a jury
