Aims
Specified learning outcome
(8.g) Shows interest in current affairs and broadens his background knowledge.
(10) Students are able to communicate and report in the language of instruction. They are able to use at least two other languages orally and in writing in a business context, they master all techniques and skills required for an efficient and effective business communication.
(10b) As for the foreign language taught in this course, they master general as well as specific business vocabulary and grammar and they can apply both vocabulary and grammar in written and oral communication.
(11.f) During a discussion or conversation, explains and defends a view on (business) economic problems.
Learning outcome per assignment
1. Students can apply vocabulary from texts and video materials dealt with in class in specific exercises (gap-filling, translation etc.) and in conversation.
2. Students can phrase a written reply to general questions on the contents of these materials.
3. Students can summarize the main ideas and structure of texts not covered in class using a dictionary.
4. Students can link the contents of these texts to relevant social or economic facts from within German-speaking countries.
5. Students can conduct business correspondence via mail.
6. Students can engage in a business conversation when visiting a German company and report on this visit.
7. Students can summarize a contents, give a presentation in a creative way, moderate a conversation using discussion topics.
8. Students can draw up a succinct written report on presentations or conversations.

Content
1. Vocabulary.
Topics: general and economic topics, such as German companies (organisation, products, technique, staff, sales..), work and health, business travel and communication with companies (appointments, emails); text and video materials linked to these topics.
2. Grammar.
The main topics are reviewed, the focus is on syntax and on reporting: Konjunktiv der indirekten Rede.
3. Intercultural skills.
Focus on doing business with German business partners with a view to the study visit in Berlin.
The tenets of business communication with German-speaking partners.
4. Business communication.
Desk research about German companies with a view to the company visit in Berlin.
Mail communication with German companies.

Discussion - Presentation - Report - Skills training
Interactive seminar with assignment and presentation.
De attendance and collaboration of students is required in classes and during the study visit to Berlin.
In case of late cancellation students are obliged to pay the costs made before the study visit. These costs cannot be reimbursed.

Explanation
- the written exam evaluates students’ knowledge and mastering of the elements 1,2,3 mentioned below in ‘contents’ and of the above mentioned learning goals and outcomes.
The evaluation is based on the following elements.
The written exam tests if students can apply vocabulary, grammar and complete questions assessing writing skills.
The continuous assessment and presentation start from the 'core' study visit to Berlin. Students write a report in German that not only reports on the company visits but also discusses a social, historic, ecological or cultural aspect of the city. When drawing up this report and when in touch with German companies they use the economic vocabulary and discussion techniques that they have acquired in the coursebook.
They give a presentation in class which is based on this report. The lecturer gauges the quality of the presentations and of the report, but also the participation of students in class.
Final result:
written exam: 8/20 - continuous assessment and presentation (+ evalulation of the written report) : 12/20
Procedures for the second exam period are identical to those of the first exam period.
