Aims
On successful completion of the course, students will be able to critically analyse the main issues in Chinese domestic and foreign politics by using a multidisciplinary approach (political science, history, media and discourse analysis). Moreover, they will have familiarised with the practice of presenting own arguments and debating them in class. Finally, they will have improved their research skills as well as their ability to work in team.
Previous knowledge
Students should have prior working knowledge of Chinese as the course will make use of materials in original language.

Content
The course will offer an introduction of the most relevant aspects in China’s domestic and foreign politics. The course will consist of three parts. The first part will focus on China’s current mono-party system offering an overview of the main political institutions and their role in the central administration. Particular attention will be devoted to the relations between the political apparatus and China’s economy and society, including in-depth analyses on specific policies (agriculture; education; information and propaganda; industrial and labour relations; etc.). The second part will concentrate on China’s foreign relations and will examine China’s international political economy, strategic partnerships, participation in international organizations, hard and soft power. A third part will focus on the use of language in Chinese politics and on the analysis of selected communication strategies/information campaigns.

The points accumulated during the academic year for the permanent evaluation will only be valid in the June examination.
The September examination will be based on a written exam which will count 20/20.
