The aim of this course is to translate a Greek historiographical text and to analyse its contents. In addition, the students are expected to improve their knowledge of Greek and their ability to translate these texts.

 

A basic knowledge of ancient Greek is required.

This academic year extracts from Arrianos' Anabasis Alexandrou will be read.

A Greek text, glossary, grammatical analysis and - at the end of the semester - a translation and a commentary are provided for the student.

The students prepare themselves for the classes by making their own translations, which they present during class. The assessment of this translation constitutes the basis for further grammatical, historical and historiographical analysis. Every week, a preliminary class is organised where the texts read in class are translated and where questions can be asked. Participation in the preliminary class is not obligatory but recommended.

The student makes a written preparation of two questions, which (s)he presents orally to the member of the teaching staff. The questions contain extracts from the texts previously discussed in class: one has to be translated and the other has to be translated and explained. A third question will include the discussion of a part of the subject matter.
