Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1) rethink aspects of the grammar Italian from the complex sense up to the text level;

2) grasp the traditions of grammatical-semantic, text-linguistic and linguistic-pragmatic research in Italy, in line with ongoing developments in the international context;

3) analyze authentic texts using a theoretical conceptual framework and actively employ this framework in their own text production;

4) further develop oral academic language skills from a text-linguistic point of vue;

5) explore some methods and tools of (Italian) text linguistics.

Students master the Italian language at B2 level and are familiar with basic principles of Italian linguistics and its historical developments. Students have a sound knowledge of the main theoretical and analytical models in general linguistics and have developed solid research and reporting skills.

Language assigns to semantic content multiple concentric circles of form wholes, within and across (complex) sentences. Thus, via semantic roles, we deictically situate actors through expression of time, space, and modality, and build informational and inferential text connections of many kinds. We study the basic components and structures of texts at the informational, referential-thematic, logical-argumentative, and enunciative-polyphonic levels. For this purpose, Italian valency theory and text linguistics form a theoretical starting point. We analyze building blocks and authentic texts, look for examples ourselves (possibly through occasional interviews with L1 speakers of Italian) and work out our own text structures in Italian. Occasionally we engage in peer-teaching. We briefly explore the methodology of text linguistic corpus research.

Students are allowed to use IA for improving their language proficiency during preparations of tasks, not for thematic content nor analytic issues. Students briefly indicate for every tasks how IA has (not) been relevant in the learning process.

Oral exam: 60% (12 points)

Paper/work: 40% (8 points)

Students are allowed to use IA for improving language proficiency, during preparation of tasks, not for thematic content nor analytic aspects. Students indicate for each task how IA has (not) been relevant in the learning process.

Students who did not pass fro the presentation and paper in the June session must rework the assignment by September and retake the entire exam. A passing grading for the paper in the first exam opportunity will be retained on retake.
