Sandbox: Academic and Professional Skills 1 (B-KUL-F0BC5A)
Aims
Students know
- the domain-specific libraries, documentation centres and (online) tools they can use in their search for relevant information;
- the importance of other forms of communication (such as essays, blogs and podcasts) to reach other target groups;
- the laws of scientific research.
Students can
- use domain-specific (online) tools;
- organize found information;
- critically assess and process found information;
- translate insights into a scientific text.
Students know
- how different types of art historians (different disciplinary future selves) function in different fields of work;
- that all these art historians have at least one thing in common, namely a critical (creative) investigative attitude;
- that 'wysiwyg' word processing (such as Microsoft Word) is of course useful, but that other markup languages (such as Markdown and HTML) are easy to learn and offer more possibilities.
Previous knowledge
passive knowledge of English and French

Content
Academic skills
This part of the course makes students familiar with the laws of scientific research.
Professional skills: reflection
In this part, students interact with art historians from the field. Thus, a concrete picture of possible disciplinary future selves is painted. Starting from this reality, students discover the importance of a critical (and creative) investigative attitude. Irrespective of the concrete context in which they work, art historians indeed have to constantly seek new data/information/knowledge/wisdom, critically process the found material in order to arrive at new solutions and insights - and possibly questions - and communicate these solutions, insights and questions to different target groups (including, for instance, students and museum visitors). In short, this part offers students an almost tangible preview of possible careers and emphasises the importance of a critical inquisitive attitude
Course material
- PowerPoints on Toledo
- additional literature on Toledo
Format: more information
Students conduct their own research on an art-related topic. Throughout the academic year, they work step by step towards a final scientific product in the form of an academic text. Guidance is provided through interim assignments and feedback moments.
Evaluation
Evaluation: Sandbox: Academic and Professional Skills 1 (B-KUL-F2BC5a)
Explanation
Students are required to submit all assignments and attend the feedback moments. If a student does not attend the feedback moments and/or does not submit the assignments, the score 'not completed' (NA) is awarded.
If a student cannot attend a mandatory feedback moment for valid reasons, the teacher will be informed as soon as possible. When a student cannot participate in the compulsory assignments or feedback moments for a longer period for serious reasons, the student shall notify the examination ombudsperson as soon as possible.
Information about retaking exams
The second examination opportunity is limited to resubmission of the paper. The mid-term assignments cannot be retaken. The student who did not participate in the feedback moments and the mid-term assignments during the year will again receive a score 'not completed' (NA).
