Aims
- Give the students insight into the place and function of translations in literary life, from a systematic approach
- Offer methods for a descriptive analysis of literary translations/adaptations.
Previous knowledge
Depending on the chosen points of view (literatures, periods, genres, etc.), the student should have a sound knowledge of literary history and of the current concepts and methods of literary analysis.

Content
- Survey of the most important concepts and methods of modern translation research.
- Application on a few case studies, namely of translated literature, adaptations and media translations.

- In the first part the course offers an introduction to the most important schools of present translation research, with special attention for the study of the translation process and for the comparative analysis of the translated literary text and its original. There is also a short discussion of the history of literary translation and translation reasoning and of the importance of translation standards and the latest developments of media translation.
- In the second part there will be descriptive research with the students on the types, place and function of literary translations within one or more European literatures. A specific method to analyse translations is applied to a few case studies.
