The aimed linguistic competence at the end of BA1 equals the reference norm A2 of the European reference frame (http://culture2.coe.int/portfolio/documents/cadrecommun.pdf), i.e. the competence of the student who has reached the intermediary level. This means that the student is sufficiently acquainted with the common expression forms and possesses the necessary ready knowledge to move functionally in Spanish in the most common domains of daily life.

No specific foreknowledge is required.

Practical linguistic study: in the first semester of the first year, the student acquires the necessary basic competences Spanish to be able to follow the courses taught in Spanish on Spanish literature and linguistics in the following semester, to be able to read literary and other texts with the necessary guidance and to be able to start the systematic study of the Spanish language and literature.

Study cost: More than 100 euros (The information about the study costs as stated here gives an indication and only represents the costs for purchasing new materials. There might be some electronic or second-hand copies available as well. You can use LIMO to check whether the textbook is available in the library. Any potential printing costs and optional course material are not included in this price.)

The lessons are given in different groups, so that the student alternates theory and exercices (individual/in group), and so that he/she is taught the required communicative skills.

1 hour/week the students are taught by a native speaker in order to enhance pronunciation and oral linguistics.

Next to participation in the classes, the students prepare the exercises at home. Next to the paper materials (PortaVoces and Gramática de uso), there are several ICT-applications available.

Evaluation

Evaluation: Spanish: Proficiency I (B-KUL-F2AP5a)

The distribution of the scores in the first semester: written exam (12 points), oral exam (6 points), permanent evaluation (2 points). The permanent evaluation consists of a simulation of the exam that is held at the end of November, beginning of December, about limited subject matter, but with the same type of questions. Afterwards, this test will be discussed extensively, as will the evaluation system. At the oral exam, spontaneous use of language is assessed, which is why there is no preparation time included.

The distribution of the scores in the second semester: written exam (10 points), oral exam (6 points, no preparation time), permanent evaluation (4 points). In the second semester, participation in the assignments that relate to the courses F0AO7A (Spaanse en Spaans-Amerikaanse literatuur I: hedendaagse periode) and F0AP0A (Spaanse taalkunde I) and a portfolio with writing exercises count as permanent evaluation.

The final score is the average of the two semesters, but there is an additional condition to succeed for the second semester and for the final score: the student should obtain at least 47,5% for the written exam in June and at least 47,5% for the oral exam in June.

At the examination moment in September, the students receive an extra assignment that has the same weight as the permanent evaluation during the year (3 points). The written exam counts for 11 points, the oral (without preparation time) for 6 points. In September, the students should also not only obtain 50% as the final score, but also at least 47,5% for the written exam and at least 47,5% for the oral exam.
