Dutch Literature III: Modern Prose (B-KUL-F0AN3A)
Aims
This course is devoted to modern Dutch prose. Every year, the course deals with a limited corpus of stories and novels, always with a certain methodological and/or literary-historical perspective at the centre. Together with the students, the texts are thoroughly analysed, with the help of insights from narratology, and situated literary-historically. This way, the acquired insights are brought to a more general level.
Previous knowledge
Elementary knowledge of the developments of Dutch literature of the 20th century and of the methodology of literary historiography and literary analysis, as taught in BA1 and BA2.

Content
This course studies the postmodern prose that appears in Dutch literature from 1975. A short introduction provides a historical situation and a heuristic approach. From that perspective, we discuss about three novel from authors such as Willem Brakman, Louis Ferron, M. Februari, Atte Jongstra, Charlotte Mutsaers and I.L. Pfeijffer. A fourth novel is analysed by the students themselves and presented in the form of a paper.
