To help students acquire the different stages of the preparation of a critical edition of texts and documents (manuscripts, versions of the same texts, correspondance, pressfiles, …). Students learn to use the methods that are required when transcribing documents, treating archives and, when the occasion arises, treating text variants. They also learn to gather the required information in order to unlock archives for academic research, but also for the larger public, and to write texts in order to prepare the text edition itself (introduction, comments, …).

Students have a knowledge of the most important heuristic instruments regarding French literature, and master French at a level that equals the beginning of BA3. In particular, the student that enrolls for this course has a proficiency of the French language as determined in the final requirements of the course French Proficiency of "Frans: Taal en Tekst II", implying the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

After a few introductory sessions with respect to historical and theoretical questions about a critical edition, the students receive a practical training regarding critical editing of texts and documents. The texts and documents that will be edited are available online, or preferably preserved in the “Archives et Musée de la littérature” (KBR). The editing includes the transcription of archives, research for the edition itself, a written presentation of the edited texts and documents (introduction, …) and work concerning the critical aspect of the edition (variants, notes, …).

Evaluation

Type : Continuous assessment without exam during the examination period
Description of evaluation : Paper/Project, Presentation, Self assessment/Peer assessment, Participation during contact hours


The evaluation of the students is based on the written paper (critical edition: 15/20), but also on the basis of the process: research of information and active participation during the session (5/20).
Taking part in the sessions is required, in order to have the paper evaluated.

When retaking the exam, the revised paper counts for the entirety of the evaluation.
Taking part in the sessions during the semester is required, in order to have the paper evaluated.
