We will introduce the mainstreams of the French literary field, from the early 19th century up to now, while discussing the construction of the historiographical process.
The course will analyse extracts of works that have left their mark on the history of literature, in order to observe in practical terms the aesthetical upheaval in the texts. Practical lectures on important works of the two centuries will complete this course.

This course is determined by a historiographical and panoramic perspective. We will approach the main movements (Romanticism, Parnasse, Realism, Naturalism, Symbolism, Surrealism, Existentialism, Nouveau Roman, Nouveau Théâtre, etc.) as well as the main figures that have driven the path of French literature, from the 19th century up to now. This course will highlight the privilege (or the reject) of some genres or writing techniques based on an aesthetics and a conception of the inscription of literature in society, and also compared to other areas of cultural production (painting, cinema,…).

Reading assignment

Two books chosen by the student (one from the 19th century, one from the 20th century) from a list established by the member of the teaching staff.
Syllabus : anthology of texts extracts (the student has to be able to recognise and situate the extracts).

Type : Partial or continuous assessment with (final) exam during the examination period
Description of evaluation : Oral, Paper/Project


Oral exam

Short paper (2p.) in which the student reports on research work (encyclopedias, French literary histories, websites, ...) with regards to a book and its author. To be chosen from the two books of the student's choice.

Students may submit a revised version of the paper if they wish. If they do not submit a revised version, the mark from the first exam opportunity is transferred for this component.
