In this students deepen their knowledge of the grammar of English. In addition, they acquire the basic skills to autonomously gather linguistically relevant information on English, using reference works and linguistic sources, as well as by collecting and analysing authentic usage data. The course consists of two components.

(1) Part 1 aims for students to further develop their systematic knowledge of, and analytical competence in, the following domains of English grammar:

  • transitivity (verb types, process types, participant roles, adjuncts)
  • mood (declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamative mood)
  • clause types (relative clauses, adverbial clauses, speech and thought representation, coordination vs subordination, embedding)
  • non-finiteness (participles, infinitives, gerunds)

(2) Part 2 aims to teach students the basic heuristic and methodological skills to autonomously investigate linguistic phenomena in English. To that end, students are introduced to the major grammars and dictionaries of English, and they learn to evaluate the information in reference works against authentic usage data as available through electronic corpora.

Part 1 presupposes that students have insight in modality and determination in English.

Part 2 presupposes that students master the basic principles of phonology, phonetics, morphology and syntax.
