The main aim of this level is the extension of the professional terminology, that is so important to students of economy. In addition to this, the previously acquired general vocabulary and grammar will be revised. When dealing with (economic) texts, reading and writing skills will be emphasised. The listening skills of the students will be stimulated by means of audio- and video recordings (amongst other things). Regarding the writing skills students should be able to write an application letter and a c.v. according to the current German DIN-rules and to react properly, twice a week, on the discussion fora of Blackboard as a writing exercise.

Students who wish to follow this course should have a rather solid basic knowledge of German (level of basic course German), in the field of grammar as well as in that of general vocabulary. The course consists of the following three parts:
 
Part 1: The basic grammar can/has to be revised in self-study (electronic exercises on Toledo). A number of grammatical topics will be deepened and practiced during the lectures (in class and/or as homework), specifically some aspects of the noun and the adjective, modal verbs, the passive, the subjunctive and the relative pronoun.
 
Part 2: The way in which the expansion of the economic vocabulary is realised, is very diverse: the following alternate: exercises in reading, listening, and writing skills, video, audio, group assignment, describing and interpreting graphs and tables, short discussions, etc…
 
Part 3: Under the heading “Communication in Business Life”, the following three communicative dossiers are seen: written business correspondence, business telephoning and negotiating in German.

3. Electronic grammatical, lexical and pronounciation exercises on Toledo

German. In order to be able to make the translation exercises though a solid knowledge of the Dutch language is required.

1. active language lecture/response lecture;
2. weekly preparation of texts, grammatical and lexical exercises, oral assignments (including role playing) and written assignments (including drawing up a commercial letter, a job application and a cv);
3. revision and further deepening of the grammar, amongst others with the aid of automized translation exercises on Toledo;
4. obtaining technical vocabulary with the aid of automized translation exercises on Toledo, as well as self-study of (a part of) the vocabulary book mentioned above;
5. bi-weekly discussion forums about a current subject on Toledo

Evaluation

1. Only permanent assessment, both oral and written (with amongst others three tests). Students are expected to cooperate promptly and actively. Presence during class is therefore “ein Muss”.
2. September: classic written exam
3. This level can also be attended as preparation for the exam “Wirtschaftsdeutsch international”, organized yearly by the DEBELUX (Deutsch-Belgisch-Luxemburgische Handelskammer) in cooperation with the Goethe Institut Brussel.
