Aims
The Common Seminar aims to introduce students to the world of academic philosophy and so to prepare the student for a PhD, an academic career in philosophy, or a range of other positions. It does so by (1) providing information on subjects such as applying to PhD programs, publishing, and grant applications, (2) teaching students how to write conference abstracts, articles, grant proposals, and a c.v, and (3) teaching students how to give an oral presentation.
At the end of the course, the student will:
- know how to apply to PhD programs
- know how to write abstracts, articles, grant applications, and a c.v.
- have become acquainted with the procedures involved in academic publishing
- be able to present an academic paper at an international conference
Previous knowledge
Students must be enrolled in the Research Master’s programme.

Content
The seminar consists of around 10 sessions and is taught by a number of professors. It provides ample room for group discussions. Feedback on the various assignments will be given by peers as well as teachers.

Attendance at all sessions is obligatory. The evaluation is on a pass / fail basis and consists in a number of written assignments and two oral presentations. In order to pass the class, students must receive a ‘pass’ for all assignments and oral presentations.

Explanation
The grading scale of this course unit is pass/fail.
The evaluation is based on the assignments, oral presentations, and attendance. Attendance at all sessions is obligatory. All elements of the evaluation are pass/fail and must be passed. The second evaluation opportunity is in August. Students seeking exemptions can contact the director of the programme they are in (Research MA = Vice Dean for the International Programme; PhD = Vice Dean for Research).
Information about retaking exams
The second examination attempt is limited to (re)submitting the written assignments. Participation and the oral presentations cannot be retaken. Students who did not participate as required or do not give the required presentations while the course was in session cannot pass.
