Content
The main focus is on written language, although in each lesson there will be a document of spoken French.
Basic grammatical and lexical patterns will be studied by means of theoretical overviews and exercises. Examples of grammatical patterns in the center of interest are word order patterns (e.g. subject-verb-object which changes into subject-object-verb if the object is a pronoun), negation patterns (2 elements around the verb) and characteristics of the verbal system (tenses, modes). Examples of lexical chapters are “Time and Place”, "Life and Death", "Daily activities".
From the second semester on students must read text fragments at home in order to be able to comment on them mainly from a purely linguistic point of view (questions on grammar and vocabulary patterns), but also from the point of view of reading comprehension (general questions on content, no detailed philosophical study).
Students will also be kindly invited to do supplementary reading exercises on Toledo.
Course material

Evaluation
Evaluation: French for Reading Knowledge: Beginner's Level (B-KUL-W2EB0a)
Explanation
Different tests will be organised: to establish students' grade:
- vocabulary and grammar test(s)
- reading test(s), with increasing difficulty: text given to the students in advance / not given to the students in advance; questions on vocabulary and grammar / questions also on reading comprehension
The precise dates and modalities of the tests (number of tests; on campus or online; what kind of help is allowed during a test; weight of the different tests) are communicated in class and published on Toledo.
If students did not attend the course as required (absence from 3 classes or more), they will not be allowed to take tests and they will receive the result 'not taken' (NA).
In case students cannot, for well-founded reasons, attend class as required, they need to inform the teacher of the course and the examination ombudsperson without undue delay.
Information about retaking exams
Student are allowed to retake a test (20 points) that covers the subject matter of the two semesters, provided they attended the class sessions as required. The student who in the course of the academic year did not attend class as required (absence from 3 classes or more) will again receive the NA result.
