Objectives

The lab sessions and exercise session aim to support the lectures from practical applications. In doing so, an attempt is made to provide a balanced coverage of the various aspects.

  • The student knows the basic concepts from Mass and Heat Transport, Thermodynamics, Separation Technology, Process Control and Reactor Technology, Introduction to Process Technology. (K2L).
  • The student can creatively use the basic knowledge from the lectures and can apply this knowledge during the labs (I1L, I3L).
  • The student can look up data in literature, tables and product sheets to use these in calculations (G1L).
  • The student can select and execute the appropriate work method, can create and follow a realistic planning, and can also handle the available equipment (P1L, G3V).
  • The student can interpret experimental data and process them in a report and formulate appropriate conclusions (G2L, G3L).
  • The student can work responsibly and autonomously in a group under minimal supervision (G3V, G4V, G5L).

Evaluation

Evaluation: Applied Engineering Techniques (B-KUL-T72203)

Type : Continuous assessment without exam during the examination period
Description of evaluation : Report, Participation during contact hours, Process evaluation, Skills test
Type of questions : Open questions
Learning material : Course material, Calculator, Computer, Reference work

1. Calculation of the final mark

This course contains only one published component mark. Consequently, this component mark is the final mark.

2. Calculation of the published component marks

Access to the lab is only granted to students who have achieved a minimum score on all safety tests. More information on Toledo.

The evaluation is done via reports, a skill test and continuous evaluation via a bonus/malus system.

The lab is assessed through continuous evaluation and critical reporting is expected.

The laboratories are assessed and evaluated based on 3 following criteria:

Laboratory preparation

  • Does the student have sufficient knowledge of the objectives of the laboratory?
  • Have the theoretical foundations of the laboratory been studied?
  • Can the student estimate the expected results?

Execution of the lab

  • Does the student have sufficient critical attitude during the execution?
  • Is the work done accurately and with care?

Reporting

  • To what extent is there a contribution of the whole team (if the work is done in a team)?
  • Are the results clearly presented?
  • Are the results critically evaluated?
  • Are the calculations done correctly?
  • Are the results discussed properly?
  • Are there clear conclusions drawn?

3. Absences

Unauthorized absence during two or more lab sessions leads to NA as a final mark. Unauthorized absence during 1 lab sessions leads to 0/20 for that session.

For absences during the teaching weeks, please contact the education ombuds on the first day of your absence. If you missed one or more obligatory sessions, please contact your professor as soon as possible and certainly within a week.

Unauthorized absence during the skill test leads to a score of 0 for this test.

If the university decides that it is confronted with situations of general force majeure or situations in which the health and safety of members of the academic community of KU Leuven may be endangered and as a result changes in the teaching and evaluation activities occur, these changes will be communicated via toledo.

4. Partial transfers and re-examinations

This course contains only one published component mark, partial transfers do not apply.

There is no second examination opportunity for Applied engineering Techniques.

If necessary, additional information about the evaluation activities is provided orally during a contact moment and / or made available on the Toledo pages of the course.

If the university decides that it is faced with situations of general force majeure or situations in which the safety and health of members of the academic community of KU Leuven may be endangered and changes are made to the teaching and evaluation activities as a result, these changes will be communicated via Toledo.

No 2nd examination opportunity.

No second examination opportunity is possible because the evaluation is based on continuous assessment and the process evaluation is assessed over multiple sessions.
