Upon completion of this course, the student has achieved the following objectives:

  • Students can apply basic concepts or theoretical paradigms to analyze a current affairs topic;
  • Students are able to conceptually articulate and substantiate their own social scientific standpoint towards a specific problem;
  • Students can compare theoretical frameworks and concepts and apply them creatively to current social issues and political themes;
  • Students are able to clarify and communicate concepts and theoretical insights.

All the course objectives are communicated at the start of the course.

POC Sociologie

The content of this teaching activity concerns “sociological theories in practice”. More specifically, it offers the opportunity to students to mobilize two concepts, theories or paradigm they learned in the Sociological Theories class and gain in-depth understanding of these by applying them to a chosen current affairs topic.
For this purpose, the course content will center around practical tools and guidelines to provide such an analysis.

  • Reader with primary texts, made available by the Professor via Ultra (Toledo)
  • PowerPoint slides of the lectures, made available via Ultra (Toledo)

  • During the practicals, theoretical/conceptual guidelines are provided to equip students for their analysis assignment, and read texts are discussed collectively;
  • The student is expected to be present and participate, and read texts in advance;
  • Support/guidance is provided during contact hours where questions on the assignment can be asked and guidance is provided.

 

This course is a lab course in the STEPS model of the bachelor's program and is taught during the last 4 weeks of the semester.

Evaluation characteristics

The evaluation consists of a group paper mobilizing 2 concepts, theories, or paradigms learned in the course Sociological Theories B-KUL-S0H34A, and applying them to analyze a current affairs topic (choice of topic and concepts/theories have to be approved by the Professor). Students will, among others, highlight how the chosen concepts/theories set light on specific understandings of the current affairs topic. Students will also read and provide feedback on another group’s draft paper.

Specific instructions and requirements about selection of organization, size of groups, content and length of the paper, and other are presented in the first lesson and communicated via Toledo.

 

Determination of the final result

The course is evaluated by the teacher, as announced via Toledo and the examination regulations. The result is calculated and expressed as an integer out of 20 (rounded to a whole number).

 

Retaking exams

The evaluation characteristics and the determination of the result of the retake exam can differ from the first examination opportunity. The specific modalities and submission deadline of the assignments will be communicated via Toledo in the beginning of July at last.
