International Perspectives in Physiotherapy (B-KUL-L02J1A)

Aims
The student should obtain knowledge and understanding on the position of health care and the practice of rehabilitation in various parts of the world. The student presents the educational programs and profession of physiotherapy within his/hers native country.
At the end of this course, students can:
- be an “ambassador” with regard to the organisation and position of physiotherapy in their native country
- report on physiotherapy education in their native country
- report on physiotherapy education and the profession in their native country with regard to historical, cultural, geografic and social parameters
- discuss the differences between physiotherapy education and profession between their native country and Flanders
- gain basic knowledge on the Belgian health care system and settings
Previous knowledge
Prerequisites for students who are not enrolled in the Bachelor/Master programme of rehabilitation sciences and physiotherapy, but who wish to include the course as an optional course in the diploma contract of their programme: These students must contact the course coordinator. On the basis of the student's previous knowledge and motivation, the coordinator will decide whether or not to admit the student to the course.
The student has obtained a bachelor degree in (rehabilitation sciences and) physiotherapy.
For pedagogical, organisational and security reasons, this course is not open to exchange students.
The student is interested in international health care and is open for diverse cultures.

Content
- An introduction class will highlight the aims and organization of this course
- Topics focus on the international and intercultural framework and organization of the Belgian Health Care System.
- Students gain basic knowledge on the Belgian health care system and settings by means of an (observation) internship and reflective discussion.
- Students give presentations on the organisation of educational programs and physiotherapy profession in their native country.

Format: more information
Students are expected to participate in classes. Students have to complete an (observation) internship and reflective discussion. Students give a presentation on the organisation of physiotherapy education and profession in their native country. Finally, students write a report discussing the information of their presentation in relation to information from other classes and presentations.

Explanation
The final score of this course will consist out of a score on the presentations given by the students and the written report. Weighting of scores will be posted on Toledo.
Students who do not complete the (observation) internship, obtain a ‘not completed’ (NA). A score ‘not completed’ (NA) on at least one of the assignments, results in ‘not completed’ for the entire course.
The students are expected to be acquainted with the education and the examination regulations of the KU Leuven and the faculty additions.
Information about retaking exams
Students will write a new report on the basis of additional feedback from the supervisor if this was not sufficient. More information will be provided on an individual basis by the coordinator of the course.
The score of the (observation) period (2nd exam period) will be transferred to the 3rd examination period. A score ‘not completed’ (NA) on at least one of the assignments, results in ‘not completed’ for the entire course.
