Project Structural Engineering 1 (B-KUL-H0P94A)
Aims
This project focusses on the design of a high-rise building. Upon successful completion of this course unit, students are able to:
- Estimate the lateral (wind) loads
- Design an efficient lateral load-resisting system.
- Perform a load descent (horizontal - vertical loads)
- Select a flooring system
- Perform the static analysis of the chosen design
- Dimension and detail structural components (floor, beams and columns)
Students work in groups to design a high rise building from the global structural design up to detailed structural components, based on their knowledge of structural mechanics and design of concrete and steel structures. The students are also able to explain the influence of design choices on structural response, and have insight into the technical and economic feasibility of the proposed design.
Previous knowledge
Strength of materials, Structural Mechanics, Finite Elements, Design of Steel and Concrete structures, Eurocode-based design.

Activities
4 ects. Project Structural Engineering 1 (B-KUL-H0P94a)
Content
The project work starts with a comparison of different lateral load systems and floor systems based on a literature study, taking into account the technical and economic feasibility. Based on this comparison, a structural concept is selected for taking up vertical and horizontal loads and a preliminary design is worked out. Each group makes a preliminary design with realistic dimensions and an initial estimate of the member forces.
During the second part of the project work, the preliminary design is elaborated in more detail. Based on a detailed finite element model, critical structural components are selected and designed: for a critical concrete column, beam and connection, the reinforcement is calculated in detail, and connection details of the floors and a facade solution are elaborated.
Seminars, company and/or site visits are support the project-based education.
Evaluation
Evaluation: Project Structural Engineering 1 (B-KUL-H2P94a)
Explanation
A final report is prepared for each group that includes a description of the design, including reproducible design calculations. The assessment is done on the basis of this written report and an oral presentation.
Information about retaking exams
In view of the specific evaluation form, no alternative exam will be organized in the September exam period. An exception will be made for those students who have shown sufficient commitment during the year, but whose report has been assessed as insufficient, They will be given the opportunity to improve the report and present it again orally, but the guidance is limited to a feedback conversation.
