Infrastructure Engineering (B-KUL-H0P88A)
Aims
Teaching the civil engineer the skills and the experience needed in designing roads, bridges and tunnels as a multi-criterium problem. From his/her thorough knowledge of dynamics of constructions, of materials, finite elements, and foundation technology, we will arrive at an application of this knowledge on very concrete construction works with a very large social impact.
Learning to estimate the boundary conditions such as production, environment, energy, maintenance, safety, landscape, urbanity, traffic transit, mobilization of human power, economic impact, and translating these boundary conditions into design parameters.
Optimizing and learning to decide within the multitude of technologically founded solutions which solution has the highest social basis. Critically analyzing solutions and formulating alternatives for a problem within the domain of traffic needs and within the domain of bridging and/or tunneling obstacles. From the point of view of management, this programme wishes to teach the exploitation aspects, the cost-reducing elements, the inspection and maintenance aspects of roads, bridges and tunnels. Intelligent techniques in monitoring these works of art are also integrally part of the programme.
