This course is designed to introduce future engineers to the legal aspects of energy. The lectures will cover the following topics: 

  • Introduction to energy law and policy from a theoretical perspective, institutions and actors in the EU and Belgium; 
  • Fossil fuels and nuclear energy under international law;
  • Market design in the EU: electricity, gas, hydrogen (and CO2);
  • Renewable energy under EU law; 
  • Offshore renewable energy in the North Sea basin; 
  • Renewable gases and fuels; 
  • Managing carbon emissions: the EU ETS and carbon capture technologies for storage and utilisation. 

Study cost: 1-10 euros (The information about the study costs as stated here gives an indication and only represents the costs for purchasing new materials. There might be some electronic or second-hand copies available as well. You can use LIMO to check whether the textbook is available in the library. Any potential printing costs and optional course material are not included in this price.)

Slides and notes during lectures

Practical lecture

The course generally consists of lectures, supported by slides and materials. 

One in-class tutorial will be held. During this session, students will work in groups to critically analyse policy briefs on selected topics of energy law. Subsequently, the results of each group are presented. Little to no prior preparation is required and the task may be completed during the session. Participation in this tutorial counts towards the final grade.

The grading for this course is composed of two partial assessments: 

1) an oral examination during the exam period. Students receive two questions and are given the time to prepare their response in succint notes. These notes are not assessed. During the examination, additional questions may be posed. Students receive a grade on 20. 

2) participation in the in-class tutorial, including submission of a brief report and presentation. This session is graded on a pass-fail basis. 

To receive a passing final grade, the student must complete both partial assessments.

For retakes, the assessment criteria are identical, except for the in-class tutorial. For the tutorial, an alternative assigment will be given, corresponding to the same skills and workload as the in-class tutorial.
