Seminar in Radiology, Radiotherapy or Nuclear Medicine in vivo (B-KUL-G00K0A)
Aims
This course brings the student in contact with recent developments and research in radiology, radiotherapy, or nuclear medicine, both as to diagnostics and therapy, as well as with the professional field.
The student should at the end of the course understand the newest developments in medical radiation physics research and technology, and be able to put these in the correct context. The student should also be able to synthesize the scientific information obtained in a written critical discussion.
Previous knowledge
The student is familiar with the basics of medical radiation physics. This includes the theoretical basis regarding the technology and techniques used in the radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and radiology services, and regarding elements of radiation protection. The student has a diploma of Master in de medische stralingsfysica, Master of Medical Physics, or holds the certificate of "Deskundige in de medische stralingsfysica (expert in medical radiation physics)".
Is included in these courses of study
Activities
3 ects. Seminar in Radiology, Radiotherapy or Nuclear Medicine in vivo (B-KUL-G00K0a)
Content
The student participates in at least 20 h (effective attendance or participation) of several of the activities listed below, or similar:
- Annual BHPA- Belgian Association of Hospital Physicists meeting (submission of master’s thesis as abstract, if possible)
- Study afternoons of the Belgian Association for Radiation Protection
- Symposia on radioprotection organized by the Belgian Society for Radiology
- Internship meeting (all Belgian Interns and internship supervisors where each intern presents his own internship + project to colleagues, now only in RT but possibly also with NUC and RAD)
- Annual meeting at the Competence Center for Medical Radiation Physics at UZ Leuven
- Internal lectures in the context of the radiotherapy Wednesday sessions (also clinical, not just medical physics)
- Seminars by external visitors
- Webinars by commercial companies or other universities/entities (IAEA, ...)
- ‘Continuous education’ sessions of the BHPA
- PhD defenses
- Thematic conferences/workshops on medical radiation research (e.g. BelNuc)
Course material
Slides or other material provided by the activity.
Evaluation
Evaluation: Seminar in Radiology, Radiotherapy or Nuclear Medicine in vivo (B-KUL-G20K0a)
Explanation
The grading scale of this course unit is pass/fail.
At the end of the course the student submits a report that contains:
a) a list of the activities attended, with their name, location and date, and the duration of the student’s effective participation,
b) a synthesized description of the scientific information obtained during these activities, indicating which new developments in medical radiation physics research and technology have been encountered, and showing that the student understands these and is able to put these in the correct context.
