Religious War and Peace in the Early Modern World, 1500-1800 (B-KUL-F0UJ1A)
Aims
This course offers an advanced historiographical discussion of the relationship between religion, war and peace in the early modern world. Debating questions of religious coexistence and tolerance in the Reformation era, it analyses the reconfiguration of the political and religious map of the early modern world, and its lasting legacy until today. Studying religion in context will help students to better address questions of religious conflict and tolerance in both the past and the present.
After taking this course, you will:
- Have an advanced understanding of the impact of the Protestant and Catholic Reformations in the early modern era, and its repercussion on the religious landscape of the early modern world
- Have developed advanced skills in understanding and participating in historiographical debates about religious war and peace, and confessional co-existence and tolerance in the early modern era
- Have refined your ability to argue, write and communicate academically about (early modern) religion, religious peace, and religious co-existence.
With regards to the festivities around '600 years KU Leuven' , the course in the academic years 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 will specifically address the role of the university of Louvain during the Wars of Religion.
Previous knowledge
Knowledge about the early modern period is recommended, but basic facts and reading will form part of learning modules on Toledo which can be done at your own rythm.

Content
This course aims to introduce you to the historiography of religious war and peace, and proceeds with discussion seminars as well as preparatory readings and modules on Toledo.

Students will practice their written skills in debating about religion on an advanced academic level by preparing one essay which applies the gained insights from the learning modules and the discussions, focusing on the possibilities and limits of the religious existence in the early modern era.
