PROGRAMME-SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES (PSLO)

During their education master students in sociology acquire domain-specific knowledge, skills and attitudes. Graduated masters of sociology have attained the following program-specific learning outcomes:

Sociological theory (T-PSLO)

T1 The masters of sociology have in-depth knowledge of and insight in the sociological interpretive frames and theories, both in the general sense and in their more concrete translations within one or more sociological subdomains.
T2 The masters of sociology are capable of explaining and interpreting concrete social phenomena on the basis of their knowledge of and insights in sociology and one or more sociological subdomains.

Methods of social science research (R-PSLO)

R1 The masters of sociology are capable of looking up, selecting, synthesizing, critically evaluating and using relevant sociological sources and information to answer (research) questions.
R2 The masters of sociology are capable of, in view of answering a specific research question, and through thorough scientific argumentation, selecting an adequate procedure to generate the necessary data.
R3 The masters of sociology have an advanced insight in the characteristics of and differences between quantitative and qualitative sociological research methods and techniques and are capable of applying them correctly.
R4 The masters of sociology are capable of independently converting a complex social or social-scientific research problem into sociological research questions, setting up a research design, and going through a full empirical cycle (by means of quantitative and/or qualitative methods) in order to formulate an answer to the research questions.
R5 The masters of sociology adopt a reflective attitude towards the achievements, limitations and scientific merits of (their own) sociological research findings by dissecting the applied research methods and techniques and critically discussing the findings and conclusions.
R6 The masters of sociology have knowledge of and take into account the ethical and deontological codes within the discipline and within scientific research generally. They conduct their research meticulously, refrain from plagiarism, communicate the results in a nuanced and truthful manner, and report in a clear, nuanced and faithful manner, so that the findings can be verified.

Policy (P-PSLO)

P1 The masters of sociology have advanced knowledge of and insight in the policy-making process within one or more social subdomains.
P2 The masters of sociology are capable of contributing to the preparation, development, implementation, and evaluation of policy in social organizations, companies, or governmental institutions within one or more sociological subdomains.

General academic education (A-PSLO)

A1. The masters of sociology are capable of synthesizing, presenting, and reporting about research findings, theoretical problem definitions and policy-directed problem solutions in a scientifically sound manner, both written and orally.
A2 The masters of sociology have a reflective attitude vis-à-vis reports and news coverages of social events and society at large, scientific research and theoretical interpretations of social facts, problems and developments.
A3 The masters of sociology are capable of working autonomously, effectively and efficiently within the context of a complex project; by working meticulously, planning, organizing, setting priorities, and meeting deadlines.
A4 The masters of sociology are capable of reflecting thoroughly on current topics and issues within one or more sociological subdomains and on their potential consequences for society and policy.
