After a master’s degree in medical (radiation) physics, this postgraduate programme offers a further specialization. Apart from a limited set of courses, it mainly consists of an internship in one of the three specializations, i.e. radiology, radiotherapy, or nuclear medicine. This provides you with the necessary hands-on experience to work as a medical physicist, primarily in the clinical environment of a hospital but also in (medical physics-related) industry, in government services, or in research.

Objectives

This postgraduate programme offers further theoretical as well practical in-depth study in radiology, nuclear medicine, or radiotherapy, mostly via an internship in one of these domains. This involves learning and practicing the competencies for the chosen specialization that are defined by law and necessary to function as a medical radiation physicist in a clinical setting. The programme strongly focuses on quality assurance and special techniques. The internship is carried out in one of the research departments of the UZ Leuven hospital or in another recognized hospital.
The training constitutes an excellent basis for a PhD in one of the related research departments of the UZ Leuven, Campus Gasthuisberg. Together with a master diploma in medical (radiation) physics, this postgraduate certificate also gives access to the certificate “Deskundige in de medische Stralingsfysica” of the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC), allowing for positions of medical physics expert in hospitals or specialized centers, in industry or in governmental institutes.
