The student

Training objectives:

The student

...has a scientific, investigative approach to their own discipline, teaching methodology and within the general pedagogical-educational domain, with a focus on creativity and sustainability. They are able to reflect on their own educational vision.

The LU Leuven student has completed LIMBO 1 or a similar course (to be checked by the teaching staff) and acquired basic knowledge of general pedagogical subjects. The student can also follow LIMBO 1 or a similar course at the same time.

The student is able to understand and interpret results from recent education research and teaching methodology research. The student appreciates the usefulness of such research, but the student also understands that introducing results from education research into the specific education practice (and in specific school subjects) demands a translation procedure and making a comparative assessment.

The student is capable of and willing to study, critically assess and form their own viewpoint about recent developments and challenges with regard to the profession of teacher, the school organisation and the relation between education and society on the basis of theoretical frames and scientific research. Furthermore, the student is capable of and willing to enter into a conversation about their own viewpoint and to adjust this viewpoint if necessary on the basis of new insights.

The student is capable of and willing to develop their own viewpoint in a nuanced and substantiated manner with regard to current matters in the following domains: pedagogical-educational (e.g. vision on learning and support of that), social-political (e.g. visions on education and school policy, relation freedom-control), socio-economic (e.g. education equality, visions and initiatives around that, aspects around diversity), ideological (e.g. pedagogical freedom and diversity) and cultural-scientific (e.g. role of expertise, meaning of educatioal quality).

The course ‘Teacher Education in an International Persepctive’ will be organized as a Blended Intensive Programme, a sub-programme within the Erasmus program 2021-27.

In addition to students from KU Leuven (educational master), students from 6 teacher training programmes from 5 countries will participate. The foreign students come from Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway and South Africa.

The OPO consists of a virtual preparation, a contact week in Utrecht (financial supported by the Erasmus+ programme) and a virtual post-processing.

The theme of the 2023-2024 edition is ‘The dynamics of teaching in the 21st century’.

The 30 contact hours are set up from Monday 18 to Friday 22 March 2024.

Monday 18 March 2024:

Provided by the (guest) lecturers and made available on Toledo.

During the blended intensive programme, students from the EM’s KU Leuven, the Association of KU Leuven and students from Cologne, Enschede, Helsinki, Oslo, Stellebosch and Utrecht can participate.

English as a language of instruction is necessary.

Individual assignment - Presentation - Report

The Blended Intensive Programme ‘Teacher Education in an International Perspective’ consists of

  • a virtual preparation
  • contact hours in March 2024 in Utrecht
  • a virtual post-processing

During the preparation, 2 online moments will be provided (end of February and beginning of March 2024). During the first online contact moment, students get to know each other and get an introduction to the course is provided (objectives, programme, study material, evaluation, etc.).

Students study their own education system and their teacher training, as well as the education system and teacher training in Belgium. During the second contact moment, the students are introduced to

  • the education system in Flanders, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway and South Africa
  • the teacher training courses in Flanders, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway and South Africa
  • current educational aspects

The contact hours will be set up between 18 and 22 March 2024 (see explanation content). At the end of the contact week, students present their preliminary results to each other.

After the contact week, the students continue to work on their assignment in groups.

During an online moment after the contact week, students present the final results of the assignment to each other and submit a report on their further processing.

Evaluation characteristics

During an online session, the students present their results regarding the assignment.

The students submit the group report at the latest 7 days after the moment of return.
