2.5 ects. Academic Dutch for Communication Scientists (part 1) (B-KUL-S0C34a)

2.5 ECTS Dutch 17.5 First termFirst term
POC Communicatiewetenschappen

The course consists of a number of modules
1. Written communication
The emphasis is on the fluent, clear and attractive formulation of argumentative texts on different levels (scientific, vulgarized, journalistic). Both general and specific writing strategies are taught. The argumentative structure of different kinds of journalistic texts (news report, press report, editorial, ...) is studied and analyzed. Also the argumentative structure in written correspondence (formal letters and such) is discussed and practised actively.
2. Oral communication
The students develop the skills that are necessary to conduct and participate in debates. The argumentative structure of debates is studied by means of video fragments. On the basis of a number of authentic sound and image fragments, the students also gain an insight in the various language and pronunciation variants of Dutch (dialect, 'interlanguage', standard language). In this way, students come to understand that it is better to use a more formal pronunciation variant in specific formal situations. After a diagnostic test of the students' speech, a few classes are devoted to the correct pronunciation of sounds. Giving a presentation in front of an audience is also further examined.
3. Acquisition of vocabulary
The students are expected to look up a number of 'new' or unfamiliar words in topical texts (preferably texts related to communication sciences and journalistic texts) and put them on a specific forum on Blackboard. By the end of the academic year, students should be able to use all the words (600 in total) actively.

All teaching components are backed up by means of the electronic platform Blachboard. All extra teaching materials (exercises, topical texts on teaching subjects, PowerPoint presentations of the classes) will be available on this platform. The platform Blackboard is frequently used:

  • the platform consists of a number of discussion platforms on which the students can post their contributions; the instructor assesses these contributions on language and formulation. The students receive individual feedback on their contributions.
  • throughout the year, 'new' vocabulary is collected on Blackboard. In the practicals, the accent of the students is being remedied. By means of pronunciation cassettes, the students can remedy their own accent throughout the year.

Evaluation

Evaluation: Academic Dutch for Communication Scientists (B-KUL-S2C18a)

Category : continuous evaluation
Type of evaluation : Closed book, Paper, Presentation

The evaluation occurs by means of a system of permanent evaluation. The modules are spread equally over the whole year. The assessments occur at the end of each module by means of a practical exercise.
The first semester the written communication skills are tested by means of a opinion paper on a current theme in which the student must prove that they can reason, argue and formulate an opinion in a clear, attractive and correct manner.
During the second semester the oral skills are tested by means of presentation of a newscast; naturally during classes, the students will also have to participate in debates.
At the end of the second semester the new vocabulary is tested. During a written test, the students also have to prove that they are capable of applying the theory on writing argumentative texts.
