Analysis of Supply and Demand in Education (B-KUL-P0L01B)
Aims
This course deals with the pedagogical needs of individuals and groups and with the role pedagogues play in the fields of education, care and training. The course has following objectives:
- acquiring knowledge of the questions pedagogues are confronted with and of their contributions in the different fields;
- gaining insight in some key concepts concerning education, care and training and the theories underlying these concepts;
- learning to reflect critically on the personal learning process;
- acquiring some basic pedagogical competencies with regard to interviewing, observing, reporting and working in groups.
Previous knowledge
Highschool degree; sufficient knowledge of Dutch and English; a positive attitude towards Educational science as a scientific discipline.
Order of Enrolment
This course unit is a prerequisite for taking the following course units:

Content
Students conduct five assignments in small groups, starting from a certain case study:
- Assignment 1: Inventory of educational problems that are included in the case study.
- Assignment 2: Problem analysis directed towards the understanding and clarifying of three educational problems that were separated in the first assignment, starting from supplied literature and an overview of possible informative websites.
- Assignment 3: Getting acquainted with educational support types that can be offered within the framework of the problems that were analysed in the above assignment. This assignment will also be concretely supported by literatures and websites.
- Assignment 4: Getting acquaintd with concrete educational interventions by means of practice visits and interviews with persons that play a role in the educational reality that is evocated in the case study.
- Assignment 5: Critical reflection on the personal task- and group proces.
Aims
The course discusses the pedagogical realities of individuals and groups with their needs, challenges and problems (demand side) and the role of educationalists and diverse organisations in educational workfields and what they contribute to the formulation and approach to educational questions (the supply side). The course has the following objectives:
- acquiring knowledge of the questions educationalists are confronted with, their contributions to that and the different fields in which this occurs;
- gaining insight in some key concepts concerning education, care and training from the theoretical perspective of the diverse subdisciplines in educational theory;
- learning to reflect critically on the personal learning process;
- acquiring some basic educational competences on the beginners level, with regard to setting up and reporting of observations/interviews, researching and processing of information, composing a report and being able to work in a group.
