This course discusses the following subjects:
1. Plants and water: water potential and osmosis, water transport and transpiration
2. Mineral nutrition: the elements and their role, absorption, transport and redivision, assimilation of S and N
3. Assimilation and metabolism of carbon:
- photosynthesis, photorespiration, C3, C4 and CAM plants
- effect of environmental factors on photosynthesis
- transport and redivision of assimilates
- synthesis of carbohydrates: sucrosis, starch, cellulosis, fructans
- phenylpropanoids: phenoles, lignin, phytoalexins
- wax, cutin, suberin, isoprenoids
4. Growth and development:
- kinetics
- hormones: auxins, gibberellins, cytoquinines, ethylene, ABA and others
- differential growth (tropisms)
- photomorphogenesis and the role of phytochrome
- effects of temperature (vernalization)
- photoperiodism and bloom
