Aims
This course gives insight into the way in which children acquire their mother tongue, familiarizes the students with the basic methods of research on language acquisition, and deals with recent developments in research.

Content
1. A survey of the typical stages in development in the acquisition of phonology, lexicon, semantics, syntax and pragmatics, with special attention for explanatory principles.
2. Introduction into the various methods of analysis based on recordings, transcription and corpus research.
3. Discussion of a number of recent developments in research, such as the role of the lexicon in the acquisition of syntactic structures, the relation between language development and general cognitive development, and the role of typological differences in the language acquisition process.
