Aims
The aim is to impart specialized knowledge and methodological skills with regard to the cultural history of Japan based on using primary Japanese sources. Scientific methods are explained and discussed by means of concrete subjects. Students learn to apply these methods and acquire insight into the development of Japanese culture in various areas. The focus is on the Bakumatsu and the Meiji period.

A well-defined and coherent subject is chosen from a period of Japanese history, especially the Edo and the Meiji period.
