Aramaic I (B-KUL-F0SG0B)
Aims
Providing the student with an insight into a the Aramaic language, in particular with Biblical Aramaic. After this course the students know the Aramaic script, the basic grammar and vocabulary of the language. After the course the students are able to independently analyse and read Aramaic texts with the help of existing tools (grammars and dictionaries) and are aware of the importance of the Aramaic language and literature for the study of the Second Temple Period.
Previous knowledge
Acquaintance with the elementary grammatical terminology in the students mother tongue.Knowlegde of another Semitic language (e.g. Hebrew or Babylonian) is recommended.
Content
Students are made familiar with the Aramaic square script and with the basic principles of Biblical-Aramaic grammar. They learn to recognize words, understand clauses and finally, read easy texts. They also study a limited basic vocabulary of Biblical Aramaic.
