Aims
The aim of the course in law is to acquire an insight into the interaction between law and society, to become acquainted with the way in which the contemporary lawyer deals methodically with the problems presented to him and to give a foundation to the material knowledge of law. Independent of the juridical knowledge which the student can acquire through this course, an introduction to the juridical method is at any rate an enrichment within the university education. Moreover the knowledge of law contributes to the general training of the young university student.

In this context first a number of basic law concepts are discussed: the concept of law, the subdivisions of law, the structures in which Belgian, European and international law originates and the sources of law. Subsequently closer attention is paid to a number of general principles of private law, more notably the legal rules which dominate both the broad and nuclear family.

Explanation
The exam is a written one. The students may use a text from the Belgian Constitution (without notes) of 1993. There are two big questions, one about the sources of law and one about civil law, and five smaller questions.
