Introducing the students into the possiblities and methods of automatic language processing, both from a theoretical and a practical point of view
Previous knowledge
- familiarity with the basic notions of general linguistics
- some familiarity with the use of operating and word processing systems
- sufficient knowledge of English to understand literature in this language

Content
The course covers the following topics:
- Possibilities and limitations of language and speech technology
- Regular languages and finite state automata
- Computational morphology
- Part of speech tagging and lemmatization
- Electronic corpora
- Contextfree grammars and parsing
Part of the course consists of a practicum in which the students acquire hands-on experience with natural language processing, writing simple programs in Perl.
