Aims
At the end of this course, students will have acquired an insight in the elementary distinctions between the author's problematic and his expressed opinions about his work or the position he takes in his texts. Ideally, students will be able to make sense of the limited number of moves that the 'chess-board' of contemporary philosophy allows for. The students will have gained a sensitivity for the need of changing the game altogether.
Previous knowledge
Elementary knowledge of the history of ancient and modern philosophy is required.

Content
In this course we shall try to reach to some idea about the main moves in contemporary philosophy. The lectures will present a number of philosophers by introducing their work and by situating them on the 'board' at which contemporary philosophy situates itself. The authors discussed vary each year, but the core of the course will certainly deal with Habermas, Foucault, the later Heidegger, Levinas, Lefort, Carl Schmitt, Lyotard, Derrida, Lacan.
Course Material
A selection of texts by contemporary authors (20th and 21st Century). Copies will be made available by the teacher.
Course activities
Students should prepare for the relevant texts. The students are strongly recommended to take notes during each of the lectures and/or tape them.
