Aims
The main aim of this course is to familiarize students with the main traditions and problems that characterize the history of Western Ethics.
Students should be able, more specifically, to
- explain the main theories and positions discussed in the course
- compare different theories and positions and explain the relevant differences
- read, understand and explain original text fragments of the authors discussed

Content
This course provides an essentially historical introduction into western ethics. It aims to make the students familiar with the main authors and problems which characterize the history of western ethics, starting in antiquity and up until the twentieth century. Authors discussed will include, amongst others, Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Hobbes, Hume, Kant, Mill, Sartre and Rawls.

Course activities
This course mainly consists of lectures. Some of the meetings will be devoted to a more in depth reading of some original text fragments which will require some preparation in advance by the students.
