Aims

-Students acquire insight into the social and cultural significance of Islamic praxis in a variety of geographic contexts (Africa, Middle East, South Asia, etc.).
-Students acquire an understanding of the history and problematic of the anthropological study of Islamic societies.
-Student become familiar with a number of key topics such as Islam and colonialism, Islamic identities and the question of representation, postcolonial subjectivity en Islamic reformist movements, ritual and hermeneutic praxis in the Islamic world, etc.
-Students acquire the ability to situate the topics and issues discussed within the larger field of anthropology, Islamic studies, and postcolonial theory.
