Aims

The student defines a topic of interest in the inter-related field of development and cultures.
The student appropriates expertise and abilities in a specific subfield or topic. These concern:
- the capacity to consult academic literature, critically read and analyse them and summarise its main arguments.
- to be able to formulate a research question and translate this research question into concrete research steps
- to be able to apply anthropological methodology onto the structuring of the research as on the collection and analysis of data in order to elaborate a nuanced answer to the scientific problem formulation
- to know how to critically and creatively interpret research findings in the light of current anthropological theories and development theories
- to be able to structure and present the findings and arguments in an academic paper, following the outline of an article, in the light of current theories and methodologies
- to be able to write a well-structured innovative master thesis and make clear the different research questions, methodologies and related theories

Previous knowledge

The student has a basic knowledge about the basic anthropological theories and current trends in anthropology, and about the contemporary trends in development theories and approaches.
The student has the abilities to follow academic developments in these fields, to integrate these developments into his basic knowledge, and to use this integrated knowledge to analyse concrete anthropological problems.
The student has gained a deeper insight into the basic principles and methodologies of scientific research as used in anthropology. The student knows how to apply these methods independently while reading academic publications.
The student proves of a critical scientific attitude, a personal maturity and good oral and writing communication skills.
