Aims
The principal focus in this course is on the different phases of an ethnographic research project. The
course results in 1. the development of an ethnographic product, article or video; 2. a self-reflective log
that describes the quality of the research proces.
Previous knowledge
Students are knowledgeable about the theoretic background and perspectives in social and cultural anthropology.

Content
By means of a research topic chosen by each student, the following abilities are trained: a. Conceptual design of a (small-scale) ethnographic research project, including the choice of topic, the ethics of field research; selecting methods of data gathering; hypothesizing. b. Developing a research strategy, including development of research instruments and techniques (participant observation, interviewing, using equipment (audio, video) c. developing a research network d. Analysis of data obtained (developing a narrative: coding and script-development); demonstration of the ATLAS-TI software e. elaborating and presenting a finshed product; different styles are demonstrated during class.
Course activities
- Students follow the lectures and actively participate in the discussions; - students keep a logbook; they perform smaller assignments - students make an ethnographic product - students present the product of their work

(1) Students produce a research paper, based on fieldwork, and (2) submit a research logbook. Apart from this written work, students present their research during a student conference, which is organized at the end of the term, prior to the exam period
