Aims
This course discusses dwelling culture in its relation to the dynamics of tradition. A first objective is to elaborate a theoretical and methodological framework for the study of dwelling culture as an important aspect of material culture. A second objective is to introduce the students into the anthropological literature on dwelling culture. Finally the course aims at stimulating a profound case-study based reflection on the meaning of modernisation and on the transformation of tradition.
Previous knowledge
Students are familiar with social-theoretical (anthropological, sociological, economical) concepts and theories.

Content
The first part elaborates the theoretical and methodological framework about material culture and dwelling culture, starting from an extended case-study based on ethnography and fieldwork: the Berber village culture in Kabylia, Algeria. In the second part some famous contributions to the anthropological literature on dwelling culture (Bourdieu, Rapoport, Griaule, Pieper) are read and discussed. The third part elaborates a critical reflection on the transformation of traditional dwelling culture. This transformation is interpreted as an ambivalent process of destruction and creation. Reference is made to case-study materials about Algeria and Bhutan. In a final part, students are invited to present a case from their own context or experience, and to confront it with hypotheses, concepts and methods discussed during the course.
