Aims
Acquiring theoretical and practical insights in decision making and collaboration processes at different levels in and between organisations. Gaining deeper understanding of own ways of decision making, individually and in teams, and how this influences decision making in larger systems.
Previous knowledge
Basic knowledge of organizational behavior and work psychology is recommended.
Content
In this course we start with exploring different theoretical perspectives on decision making and models that describe and explain individual decision making. Students make different tests about constructs related to individual and group decision making, and reflect on this in relation with group assignments during the course and in their daily lives.
From the individual level, we move on to the team level, and study conditions, and processes that contribute to (in) effective decision making in organisational teams.
Decision making, particularly in the top of organisations, is often related with organisational change. We explore the relation between these two, both in terms of content (what direction changes take), as well as processes (who are involved in the decision making, in what ways, and how is the implementation of changes related to the ways decisions are made?).
Special attention will be given to conflict in teams, how to deal with these in context of decision making. Is it possible to make conflicts productive and how can you do that?
Finally we explore inter-organizational cooperation and decision making. With growing interdependence between all sorts of organizations, theories and tools are needed to promote effective cooperation.
During this course students are expected to participate actively, during class and in unsupervised small group meetings. Preferably we work in internationally composed small groups on several assignments.
