POC Urbanism and Strategic Planning

The aim is to enhance students’ capacity in deepening the theoretical debate in various disciplines and to improve their capacity to relate methodological aspects to their theoretical framework, interacting among themselves and with the staff members.

The seminar activities enrich and further stimulate the often lonely work of the post-graduate researcher, through a dialectic social environment and scholarly support that help students better define their research in more integrated and, simultaneously, more focussed ways, optimising their work and time.

The aim is to reconsider the students’ on-going research activities, sharing their knowledge and perspective and enabling them with a grounded research methodology. The sharing of the motivations of why and how their research has been defined, together with the positioning of the scientific framework in space and time will help in enhancing robust knowledge development processes.

Activities

6.0 ects. Seminar Series (B-KUL-H09T8a)

N.
POC Urbanism and Strategic Planning

This part develops students’ research capacities and tests the robustness of their topic and adopted methodology. It is considered an integral part of their ph-d research activities and is fully recognized by the home institutions.

It is based on a series of research discussion seminars in which all participants to the EMSDP present their research work and progress. These seminars accommodate various stages in post-graduate research, depending on individual situations: from the early definition of a master or doctoral dissertation project, to the writing of a specific chapter in a post-doctoral or financed research project.

Seminar presentations are supervised by at least three staff members from KU Leuven and/or partner universities and or experts. Each presentation lasts around 20-30 minutes and is followed by a general discussion, in which both teachers and fellow students ask questions and provide comments and suggestions about how to improve the work. Individual tutoring is also offered, depending on demand and supply conditions.
Each student makes at least two presentations during the three-month period, showing progresses in the development of her/his research work, also on the basis of the recommendations by the panel of teachers and experts. There is a period of at least 1 month between each presentation by the same student, to allow for such improvements.
