Students can choose between two design tasks:
Design of a mixed-signal IC:
Students learn to design an integrated circuit, starting from system-level
specifications down to the actual layout and measurements.
Design of the RF transceiver of a wireless telecom. system:
Students learn to design an RF transceiver, starting from system-level
specifications down to the board design and measurement of the various
building blocks, leading to a wireless system demonstrator.
At the beginning of the course, students select one of the following two
Mixed-signal IC design:
In small teams, students design their own single-chip DCF77 radio receiver and digital demodulator, in a 0.35um CMOS technology. All aspects of IC design are covered, from system specification to layout and fabrication. Students will get the opportunity to measure their own chip after fabrication.
RF transceiver design:
The aim is to design the RF transceiver of a specified wireless telecommunication system (e.g., WiFi, RFID, radar). The students get divided in small teams of two or three, each focusing on a part of the design task. Starting from the system level specifications, students determine the system architecture taking into account propagation aspects, design the boards of the various building blocks (antennas, amplifiers, mixers, filters, ...), measure the performance, and build a system demonstrator by the end of the semester.
