The course aims to bring an overview of some different aspects of Flemish Art in a European perspective in four topics.

This course is taught by four lecturers who all treat a different aspect of the art history of the Southern Netherlands. The course persists of four classes and four field trips.
 
Module 1: Jan van der Stock – Early Netherlandish Painting and Bruegel
The introductory class offers an overview of the Early Netherlandish Painting (Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Dirk Bouts, …) and an introduction to the oeuvre of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The excursion consists of a visit to the collections of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.
Module 2: Katlijne Van der Stighelen – Flemish Baroque
 
Module 3: Leo De Ren - Flemish Renaissance and Baroque Silver
Lecture: The craftsmanship of the Flemish silversmiths from the late Burgundian period till the life time of Rubens and Van Dyck will be treated in a lecture on church, table and guild silver to create an impression of the remarkable luxury with which clergy, nobility and middle classes surrounded themselves. Ostentatious silverware made its appearance. New types of plates and an extravagant range of drinking cups came in use.
 
Excursion: The Sterckshof Silver Museum, a neo-renaissance castle in a moat surrounded by a reconstructed 17th century garden, is situated in a park just outside of Antwerp. In 1992 the former Museum of Decorative Arts was restructured into a Silver Museum. It  provides an overview of the Belgian production during the last five centuries. All the styles, forms and formats are shown in themed rooms. 
Module 4: Hilde Van Gelder - Modern and Contemporary Art in Belgium
The introductory class offers an overview of contemporary art in Belgium in reference to the historical perspective of 20th Century Belgian art. The excursion consists of a visit to the Magritte Museum, followed by a visit of WIELS, Contemporary Art Centre.
