Aims
This course is intended to focus on human rights, as they are to be respected, protected and promoted by the European Union. Not only the human rights legal framework within which the EU operates will be discussed (EU human rights law), but also the way the EU makes use of its competences to advance a human rights policy, both within and outside the EU
Previous knowledge

1. Development of a human rights framework
a. General principles, based on the constitutional traditions of the Member States and international human rights instruments
b. EC and EU treaties
c. The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights
d. Accession to the European Convention on Human Rights
2. Position of human rights in the EU legal order
a. Relationship between national, EU and international human rights standards
b. Enforcement and monitoring mechanisms
