General information

Aims
The course wants the students to get acquainted with the main tendencies in the history of the Catholic Church and theology, in particular in Western Europe, since the French revolution. The aim of this historical reflection is twofold. Firstly: to kindle the historical consciousness by placing the ecclesiastical events within their cultural-historical context. Secondly: to develop a historical-critical sense by presenting Church history as a dynamic process out of which the actual Church has grown.

Content
The historical past is perceived from four major thematic angles: theology (the main theological currents), ecclesiology (church structures, papal power, ordained ministry, laity, relation with other churches), inner Church life (spirituality, pastoral care), society (relation between Church and State, the broader social context). These issues are dealt with in a chronological framework, with separate chapters on the successive historical phases in the 19th and 20th century.
The course consists of four parts:
- Between revolution and reaction (1789-ca. 1880)
- The challenges of modernity (1880-1914)
- Mobilization and totalitarianism
- Aggiornamento and secularization
