- to get acquainted with the main tendencies in the history of the Catholic Church and theology, in particular in Western Europe, from the 8th until the 18th century;

Content
The course gives an overview of the history of the Church and of Christianity from the 8th till the 18th century. Attention is given to the general lines of the development. The historical past is perceived from three major angles: (1) the relation between Church and State and the broader social context, (2) the inner Church life (spirituality, patoral care), (3) theology (the main theological currents). The course is divided in two parts: - Middle Ages: the Church and the Carolingian dynasty; the 'transition period' (850-1100); the flourishing period of the 12th century; the challenges of the 13th and 14th centuries; the crisis of the late Middle Ages;
- Modern period: the Reformation, the confessional period, the Age of Reason.
