Church and Theology in the Middle Ages (B-KUL-A01B2A)
Aims
To acquire further skills in the study of medieval theology, especially with regard to the issues discussed in class.
Previous knowledge
No specific prerequisites. As some of the texts discussed in class are only available in Latin, basic knowledge of Latin is necessary.
Content
The course will deal with "capita selecta" from the medieval theology of the Latin Church.
(1) Discussion of medieval poetic theology;
(2) Discussion of passages from various authors (e.g. Anselm, William of Saint-Thierry, Bonaventure, Albert, Thomas Aquinas) concerning the theological theme of "divinisation";
(3) Reading the so-called "Votum" of the papal theological commission in Avignon which contains its discussion with Meister Eckhart.
