Prerequisites | |||||
The student has a BA degree that has made him/her familiar with the methodology and topics of English linguistics and literary criticism. - The student has studied English thoroughly from three perspectives: English language acquisition, linguistics and literary criticism. - The student has developed an insight into the links between different disciplines dealing with the English language, its literatures and the English-speaking world. - The student has acquired basic methodological and heuristic skills, including familiarity with IT research tools. - The student has already studied certain research topics and has communicated his findings in clear and accurate language (e.g. through term papers or an undergraduate dissertation). - In order to take an active part in research activities, the student must have the ability to think critically and in a structured way, he/she must be able to discern patterns in the data he/she analyses and to grasp systems as well as particulars. - The student must be interested in the cultural debate surrounding English and be prepared to take part in that debate.

Direct access: - Bachelor of Arts in de taal- en letterkunde: Engels After admission: - Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and Literature in English Students with a degree other than 'Bachelor of Arts in de taal- en letterkunde: Engels' (e.g. Bachelor's degree in English) are required to submit a file showing substantial academic background in the field of study. In addition to the documents specified by the University's International Office (cf. http://www.kuleuven.be/applicationform/?js=1, this file should contain: - certified course descriptions in Afrikaans, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese or Spanish; - proof of proficiency in English: either an IELTS score of at least 7.5, or a TOEFL score of at least 610 (paper-based test), 253 (computer-based test), or 102 with no score under 22 for any of the four tests (internet-based test).
