Prerequisites | |||||
General Prerequisites: The student is able to study scholarly literature in English. The student is able to discuss scholarly ideas in English. The student has basic methodological skills for research in the Humanities and with respect to ICT tools. The student has the capacity to work individually on a research topic and organize his work. The student is willing to acquire a basic knowledge about the modern development of Europe in a fast reading track at the start of the programme if that knowledge seems too limited. The student has good analytical faculties and is open to interdisciplinary thinking. Special Prerequisites with regard to the EU and Europe: The interdisciplinary Master of Arts in European Studies: Transnational and Global Perspectives is a specialized and demanding Master's degree. No general introduction to the understanding of the EU and its institutions is offered. A general knowledge of Europe, European history and European integration is already demanded when students enter our Master's programme. - Students who intend to follow Module I should have a good knowledge of European history and culture. - Students who intend to follow Module II should have a good knowledge of the history, institutional and legal framework, and policies of the EU, as well as of European integration theories. Students who did not obtain this preliminary knowledge through their previous academic studies should prepare themselves through the study of the publications mentioned on the admission requirements section of the Master of Arts in European Studies-website.

Academic background: The programme Master of Arts in European Studies admits holders of the following university degrees: - Bachelor of Science in Political and Social Sciences, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Science in Economics, Bachelor (of Arts) in European Studies; - Any Master's degree in the Humanities; - A Master's degree in other disciplines, if the candidate has professional experience in the field of study of MAES. Proficiency in English: Students who are not native English speakers are required to provide an evidence of proficiency in the English language and/or have to obtain a score on a language test indicating a C-2 level on the Common European Framework of the Council of Europe. An evidence of proficiency in the English language is not required for students who successfully finalized a full-time study programme of at least one year at a university in an Anglo-Saxon country. Belgian students who want to participate in the 'Master of Arts in European Studies: Transnational and Global Perspectives' are also required to take a test. Note that the language criteria as applied by the Master of Arts in European Studies are stricter than those indicated on the general website of the International Admissions and Mobility Unit of the K.U.Leuven. The approved tests are: - Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), for which the minimum total score required is 600 (for paper based test); 250 (for the computer-based test); or 100 (on the new TOEFL Internet-based Test). (www.toefl.org) - The International English Language Testing System (IELTS administered test), for which the minimum score required is band 7.0-7.5. (www.ielts.org) - Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) (University of Cambridge examinations): Grade B. Students must not forget to fix a date for one of the language tests well ahead of their application. The language test results have to be handed in before the start of the academic year the latest.
